National Governance for the Not For Profit (NFP) Sector

In the 2011-12 Federal Budget the Australian Government announced a package of not-for-profit (NFP) reforms, including a review of current governance arrangements faced by the NFP sector. This review formed the basis for determining governance requirements for registered entities in the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) legislation. The ACNC started on 3 December 2012 and is responsible for registering organisations as charities. The ATO will continue to make decisions about eligibility for Commonwealth tax benefits

The ACNC is the independent Commonwealth regulator of charities. The ACNC:

       registers charities

helps charities understand and meet their obligations by giving them information, guidance and advice

maintains a free searchable Register of all registered charities in Australia

is working with Commonwealth, state and territory governments and agencies to develop a 'report-once, use-often' reporting framework for charities.
